Belize climate overview
Despite having a British colonial past, this tiny country in Central America is more Creole than European in its culture and atmosphere. The economy is largely agricultural with citrus fruits, bananas, sugarcane, and timber being amongst the largest exports.
Tropical lowlands, which used to be covered by dense jungle, make up the majority of the country. These are rapidly being cleared to sell the lucrative mahogany timber, and make way for extensive plantations.
The only high ground in Belize is situated in the southwest where the Maya Mountains tower above the rest of the country. Rolling foothills and the mountains themselves are clad in thick forest with occasional waterfalls. Their unspoilt natural beauty is protected within forest reserves.
Along the coastal strip there are sandy beaches and idyllic lagoons with swampy vegetation and mangroves. Offshore is the world's second largest barrier reef, along with numerous cays and atolls, most notably Ambergris Caye, providing picturesque beach settings for the growing tourist industry.
Belize has a tropical climate with an extended wet summer season running from May to November. Tropical summer thunderstorms become heavy and persistent in the south and over the mountains, while the north escapes with showers only. Summers also tends to be hot and humid leading to sultry conditions inland, while sporadic relief is offered along the coast by fresh onshore winds. Hurricanes can pose a threat particularly in August and September.
Temperatures are more comfortable in the short winter, lasting from February to April, when Belize enjoys drier and sunnier conditions.
