Things to do in Gran Canaria in December 2024

In Gran Canaria, as on the Spanish mainland, Christmas differs from elsewhere. For instance, the main family meal is on Christmas Eve (Nochebuena) instead of Christmas Day. Also, New Year's Eve is known as Nochevieja with locals saying adios to the old year as much as hola to the new one.

One of the most eye catching spectacles of the festive period takes place on Las Canteras Beach. The Belen de Arena is a nativity display crafted from sand with grainy depictions of the baby Jesus, Joseph, and Mary. It opens to the public on the 1st December and closes at Epiphany.

The island is a popular warm weather training destination for athletes who want to escape a bleak midwinter in their homelands. With that in mind, La Cicloturista cycling races take place around Gran Canaria. They include a climb to the island's highest spot, the poetically named Pico de las Nieves (Peak of the Snows).
