Ibiza weather overview

Ibiza's weather has helped draw holidaymakers to this much loved Balearic island for decades.

Whether you go for the legendary club nights and world famous DJs, or to inspect the various UNESCO World Heritage Sites and pretty whitewashed towns, Ibiza has a huge amount to offer those after everything from late nights and lively parties to rest, relaxation and the great outdoors, all within around two and a half hours of the UK.

As an island in the Mediterranean Sea, Ibiza's weather enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with characteristically hot, dry summers and much cooler, sometimes wet, winters. The most popular time to visit runs from the end of spring to the middle autumn, when conditions are at their finest.

That doesn't stop people making the most of the ample sunshine that Ibiza receives during the winter months when the resorts are much quieter, and inland hiking trails and beach walks beckon.

Ibiza's spring - March to May

Spring is a time of transition as the weather in Ibiza moves from tail end of winter into the beginnings of summer.

If you are thinking of going in March or April, you are likely to be looking for some sunshine (between seven and eight hours each day), but bear in mind that the water is a little cold for swimming at 15°C to 16°C.

Although daytime temperatures sit at only 16°C to 18°C respectively, it's great for sitting in the sunshine and feeling the warm rays on your skin.

Evenings however, get a little nippy dropping to around 8°C in March and 10°C in April - chilly enough to warrant extra layers, and certainly not al fresco dining conditions.

The weather in Ibiza in May is a touch warmer with daily highs of around 22°C, nine whole hours of blissful sunshine, and a sea temperature of about 18°C - this is roughly the same as is feels taking a dip in Bournemouth in August.

May is the first month of the year that you could really consider a beach break to Ibiza, and is arguably one of the nicest months of the year to go.

Other benefits of visiting Ibiza in springtime, whether it's in March, April or May, include the lack of any heat and humidity, just the odd chance of seeing some rain (showers are unlikely to linger), and of course, it's pretty quiet, getting steadily busier from May onwards.

Ibiza's weather makes it a fabulous spring destination for those keen to feel some sun on their skin, explore the island on foot, go hiking, and enjoy the array of fresh seafood.

It's not really for those looking to sunbathe or go swimming in the sea, at least not until May, although a hotel with a heated pool will go a long way to adding to your comfort during this time.

Ibiza's summer - June to August

Summer is the island's busiest time for visitors, and it's easy to see why.

As well as the mega opening parties which kick off the island's clubbing season, the weather in Ibiza is simply glorious with long, hot, sunny days, and daytime temperatures that climb from around 26°C in June to 29°C by July and August.

No need to worry about those extra layers after dusk, as evenings climb from an average of 17°C in June, to 20°C in July and 21°C by August. Just as the temperature increases, so does the risk from UV rays, so remember your SPF.

Heat and humidity is also on the up, although it tends to hover around the moderate mark, which is bearable, and sea breezes help to regulate any oppressive feeling, especially by the coast.

There's so much sunshine to be had with 10 hours per day in June and August, and an impressive 11 hours (Ibiza weather's annual high) in July. There's a very slim chance you'll see any rain with no more than five days in June and August affected in anyway, and only three in July.

Occasionally, heavy rain can descend on the island, just for a day or so, to clear the air if you will, but this is rare and may only occur two or three times throughout the summer months.

During the hottest months, afternoons welcome cooling sea breezes, which roll in providing welcome relief around coastal areas.

The sea is also thoroughly inviting as it warms up during these hot months, climbing from around 22°C in June, to 25°C in July, reaching its peak of roughly 26°C in August - these are ideal temperatures for swimming, water sports, and ensuring little ones can get into the water too.

Ibiza's autumn - September to November

While May is the precursor to summer with warmer temperatures just starting to take effect and the island gradually gaining its busy buzz, September is the autumnal antithesis, as temperatures start to cool down, and the crowds begin to subside.

It's still a hugely popular destination in autumn however (the closing parties alone pulling in the crowds), with many people taking advantage of Ibiza's weather at the end of summer.

September and October in particular enjoy the tailend of warm pleasant weather in Ibiza before the, albeit mild, winter sets in.

In many ways, the weather in Ibiza in September is a continuation of conditions in August with just a slight indication that things are starting to cool down.

Daily highs level off at around 27°C, and evenings are comfortable at 19°C. The sea is still lovely and warm for swimming at 25°C, and there's an impressive eight hours of sunshine each day; that's compared to roughly five in the UK at the same time.

October is officially the wettest month of the year in Ibiza, as small areas of low pressure move eastwards over the Mediterranean.

It can be heavy and accompanied by strong winds but it is unlikely to last for an extended period of time - perhaps a day or so - although heat and humidity remains moderate, keeping things a touch close.

The real change in Ibiza's weather starts to occur from October onwards when daytime temperatures reach around 23°C and evenings become cool at 15°C.

November follows a similar pattern of decline, with daily temperatures maxing out at around 19°C, and evenings no warmer than around 11°C.

There's still a lot of sunshine around during these months, with seven hours per day in October and six in November, and the sea is still swimmable at 22°C in November (that's the same as swimming off Gran Canaria in July), and 19°C by November.

You lose any threat of heat and humidity by October, and UV takes a back seat also, at a moderate level but you're more likely to see some rain showers during these months.

Ibiza's winter - December to February

Ibiza weather sees temperatures take a tumble from December to February, and this is undoubtedly the coolest time of year on the island.

With daily highs reaching no more than between 15°C and 16°C, and night times dropping to around 8°C by January, it's clear that the weather in ibiza in winter is not right for those after a beach break.

Add to that the rapidly decreasing sea temperature of 16°C in December, which falls further to around 14°C by February, and you've got the recipe for a rather chilly swim, so a hotel with a heated pool would be required if you do want to go swimming during this time.

The weather in Ibiza in winter is however, delightful for anyone after some peace, quiet and a load of sunshine, with five to six hours each day, compared with one hour in the UK in December.

From January onwards rainfall remains comparatively low, and if you do encounter any it isn't likely to stay around for too long.

Winds can creep up during this time, as they swing round to the southwest. They tend to be at their strongest in February and March, and, if you're unlucky, you could find yourself there during one of the infrequent times when the wind blows hard for a day or two.

A plus of visiting during the winter months is the lack of any heat and humidity, and only low to moderate UV to worry about.
