Things to do in Tenerife in August 2025

Dubbed the Hawaii of Europe thanks to the locals' love of surfing, Tenerife's a great destination for water sports enthusiasts in general. The Professional Windsurfers Association sets sail for the island in August as El Médano hosts the PWA World Tour.

On the sacred rather than sporting front, save the date of the Peregrinacíon a Candelaria where pilgrims make their way, many by the traditional means of their own two feet, to the religious capital of the island and Candelaria. On Tenerife, all roads lead to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria.

Another religious event in August is the Romería de San Roque in Garachico where they have been making offerings to their patron saint since 1606 following an outbreak of bubonic plague, which decimated the population. Natives young and old dress up in Canarian costumes in this harvest-festival-style celebration. If you haven't yet tried the classic papas arrugadas con mojo (boiled salty potatoes served with a piquant sauce), floats hand plates of these out for free to give you a taste on what you've been missing out on. Arafo also hosts a romería at the end of the month, in homage to San Agustín who is believed to have created a storm to unbury the Añavingo spring, victim of a landslide.
