1. Camber Sands, East Sussex, England

For an October holiday that blends nature and history in one, consider basing yourself close to Camber Sands. This wide-open wild stretch of England's south coast, dotted with rolling sand dunes, may heave with sunbathers in summer but it's just as majestic out of season.

Book a stay at a local B&B or an all-encompassing holiday park such as Pontins Camber Sands* to make the most of this stretch of coastline.

While a walk on the expansive three-mile-long sandy beach is a given, don't miss a trip out to the wilderness of Dungeness.

Here, an RSPB bird reserve, with an exceptional variety of birdlife, meets nuclear power station and Prospect Cottage, the former home of artist and director Derek Jarman. It is a captivating day out in an environment that can feel altogether otherworldly.

There are lots of historic attractions to be had nearby, too. The cobbled streets of Rye are close at hand where Lamb House* stands as a fine example of Georgian architecture.

There's also Camber Castle*, the ruins of a medieval artillery fort built by Henry VIII that sits within the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. You can book a guided tour of both with the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

2. Deal, Kent, England

The stylish seaside town of Deal is an eclectic mix of traditional seaside town and desirable resort. Expect sophisticated restaurants such as The Rose and Deal Pier Kitchen as well as laid-back local watering holes such as The Just Reproach and The Ship Inn, which highlights the town's once notorious smuggling links.

While Deal has a pebbly beach, nearby Ramsgate, with its prestigious Royal Harbour, has a number of sandy options as well as the chance to take a seal-watching trip with Sea Searcher Boat Trips. Meanwhile, scenic Sandwich has all the crooked-beamed houses you'd expect from the best-preserved medieval town in England.

Take in three of the Kent coast's most magnificent castles on the 10-mile walk along the dramatic South East Coast Path from Deal to Dover. 3. Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England

Escape to the Essex Sunshine Coast's largest town, Clacton-on-Sea and you'll encounter every tradition of a seaside break. There's Clacton Pier, The Pavilion Fun Park, lively arcades, the Art Deco-feel West Cliff Theatre and the immaculate landscaped seaside gardens.

While the long sandy beaches may not be ideal for sunbathing by October, they certainly make for wonderful seaside walks, past colourful beach huts and historic sites such as the Martello Tower in Martello Bay.

4. Petworth, South Downs, England

The market town of Petworth in the South Downs National Park has deep roots that date beyond the Domesday Book, in which it gets a mention.

As well as stylish boutiques, cafés and markets, sights such as the Petworth Cottage Museum and Coultershaw Beam Pump tell its story during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The jewel in the crown of the town is Petworth House & Park*, which has a 900-year-strong history. The current house, an elaborate Grade I-listed Baroque creation dating from the 17th-century, holds one the finest collections of art while the gardens, the handy work of Capability Brown, and the deer park could almost justify a day's exploration in their own right.

The South Downs is crisscrossed with over 2,000 miles of public rights of way, giving you lots of options for walking and cycling; sections of the South Downs Way are ideal for both long and short routes.

Other attractions within easy reach include open-air Amberley Museum, Bignor Roman Villa with its restored mosaics and RSPB Pulborough Brooks, not to mention the likes of Chichester and Portsmouth.

Buzzing Brighton needs little introduction; whether it's the mod culture as epitomised by the film Quadrophenia, seaside antics in the form of the lively pier and bar-packed beach, or seeking out quirky items to buy in the city's famed Lanes.

The Tudor port town of Aldeburgh, with its pebbly beach and ramshackle boat sheds, lies on Suffolk's North Sea coast. Witness nature putting on a seasonal show in the New Forest National Park as the leaves turn all hues of orange and the heather deep purple.

Norwich has an illustrious past as a major Anglo-Saxon trading point in East Anglia. It has a long and colourful history and any visit to Norfolk's capital is well-rewarded with a plethora of attractions old and new, natural and man-made.

In celebration of its prestigious collection of historic buildings, the Norwich 12 route was established. This heritage trail takes in the city's main places of interest such as 11th-century Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle, the medieval Guildhall and Edwardian Surrey House, among others.
