Uzbekistan weather overview

Samarkand, on the legendary ancient 'silk road', lies in central Uzbekistan with desert to its north and west and high ground to its south and east. Weather conditions in Uzbekistan are extreme - expect searing hot, arid summers and bitterly cold, snow-laden winters.

Rainfall is low in the summer months, when the capital, Tashkent, is the best place to be. Destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1966, it has been rebuilt as a spacious modern city with broad avenues, wide areas of parkland and many fountains which serve to cool the air.

What to pack for Uzbekistan weather

Light clothes are best for a summer visit but supplement them with wraps for chilly evenings. Be prepared for rain between October and May. In winter, swaddle up like the invisible man - the wind chill factor can be ferocious.
